How would you respond to world poverty?

Sujato

World poverty is one of the most shameful things in the world.  The Buddha said that in this world, nature is very generous and will provide us with what we need.  The problem comes when some people are not content with what they need, but become more and more greedy.  This is why some people in the world are very rich and others are very poor.  To address this we must do two things.  First we need to make laws and controls that will prevent too much greed and inequality, and will encourage the rich to share what they have with the poor.  And we also need to show people that real happiness doesn't come from getting lots of stuff.  It comes from being contented, having family and friends, and feeling a sense of meaning in life.  This is where religion can help.
