While the media plays an important role in keeping the Australian public informed about events and issues, it can also be responsible for shaping readers' opinions about the people and groups portrayed in news stories.  Teenagers are one group that the media often reports on and portrays in a particular light.  In this activity you will explore how they do this.

Carefully read the following article, from Perthnow media outlet, to sort the facts from the opinions.  You will be asked to complete a short quiz about the content.

Brazen graffiti vandals attack Wundowie police station

A WA police station has been targeted by mindless graffiti vandals twice over the Easter weekend.

News of the graffiti attack comes after Perthnow revealed a spate of burnouts in Wundowie streets had left an endless trail of rubber.

A Perthnow reader today sent these shocking pictures of the latest vandalism at the Wundowie Police Station, 70km north-east of Perth.

It was only yesterday that other pictures emerged of burnouts also outside the part-time country police station.

Police said the burnouts occurred sometime on Monday night and the graffiti attack was thought to have happened on Tuesday night.  Police spokeswoman Ros Weatherall said: "At this stage, we are unable to determine whether these two incidents are linked."

A woman who sent through the latest photos, which were taken this morning, said Wundowie was "out of control."

The woman, who did not want to be named, said police were being sent a message by local youths that they were not afraid of them.

"Basically they have been getting away with this behaviour for years without the police doing anything," the woman said.

"All the residents can do is sit inside their houses and not go out for fear of being attacked."

Wheatbelt Detectives and Wundowie Police are investigating the two incidents, and have spoken to a number of people, including witnesses who provided some "helpful and positive" information, Ms Weatherall said.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
