Professional Learning

Difference Differently offers four free online professional learning courses aimed at increasing diversity competence in education professionals and their students.  Using research, best practice examples, video reflections, and interactive activities, the courses provide teachers with an understanding of diversity education and practical strategies for implementing it in schools.

Teachers and other education professionals are welcome to register for the professional learning courses.  Participants can elect to complete one or more of the courses, which are complementary but can be used individually.  Each course takes between 1-2 hours to complete and participants are provided with a certificate when all aspects of a course are finished.  Each course not only provides rich content, but also incorporates a number of learning and reflection tasks for participants to complete, including contributing to online forums.

The four courses are:

Introducing Diversity Education

This course is suitable for all school staff, including non-teaching staff.
This professional learning course explores participants' understandings of and attitudes toward diversity.  It examines the rationale for diversity education in Australian schools (Australian Professional Standards for Teachers: Proficient 4.1 and 6.2).

Diversity Education in the Classroom

This course is suitable for all teaching staff.
Using current research and practical examples, this course explores teaching and learning strategies that can be used in the classroom to build students' intercultural understanding (Australian Professional Standards for Teachers: Proficient 4.1 and 1.3).

Whole School Approaches to Diversity Education

This course is suitable for school leaders and teaching staff.
This course examines ways to manage and/or celebrate diversity through whole-school engagement and strategies (Australian Professional Standards for Teachers: Highly Accomplished 1.3).

Cohesion in Diversity

This course is suitable for all teaching staff.
This new course explores issues related to the teaching and learning of Intercultural Understanding capabilities.  (NSW Teachers, please note that this new course is not yet accredited by NESA.)

The three courses, Introducing Diversity Education, Diversity Education in the Classroom and Whole School Approaches to Diversity Education, are offered by Together For Humanity, a NESA registered provider of Teacher Professional Development for the maintenance of accreditation at Proficient Teacher/Professional Competence level (courses 1 & 2) and at the Highly Accomplished Teacher/Professional Accomplishment level (for "Whole School Approaches to Diversity" course).  These have also been registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching, allowing many teachers to count the learning towards their professional learning hours.

As an endorsed provider, Together for Humanity undertake the accreditation process at the end of the calendar month.  We will notify you of your results via email.  Please note that you will be accredited for the time you undertook the course/s not the day of accreditation.
